The Garden Center

(or "Can you really grow stuff there?")

Pauline spent her summers on Grandfather's farm when she was a little girl, and now she's gone back to her roots , so to speak. Here she is just getting the planting underway at one of the Palm Desert community garden plots.

Several bags of steer manure and months later, she's now harvesting swiss chard, carrots, bags and bags of salad lettuce, and her favorite, broccoli Romanesco.

And for added flavor, the tarragon, thyme, oregano and parsley are thriving, but the basil, alas, pooped out when there was a touch of cold weather one night. Pauline doesn't put all he efforts into veggies, however. At home, she raises a colorful group of African violets, lovingly known as "The Girls," and she's also the treasurer of the Desert Quail Garden Club.
